Pope Francis has appointed Fr. José María Avendaño Perea as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Getafe (Spain), whose mother Jorja Perea, who died in 2015, is in the process of beatification.
“A mother is always aware of her children and my mother will have interceded,” said the new Prelate during a press conference held on the occasion of his appointment.
José María Avendaño Perea is a native of Villanueva de Alcardete, in Toledo and currently worked as Vicar General and for the Clergy in the Diocese of Getafe, to which he has belonged since its creation in 1991.
Fr. Avendaño was ordained a priest in 1987 and since the creation of the diocese in which he will serve as Auxiliary Bishop, he has developed a good part of his pastoral work in the city of Leganés, of which he was Archpriest.
He has been serving as the Episcopal Counselor of the General Council of Cáritas Española since 2018.
On July 21, the diocesan phase of his mother’s beatification cause was opened in the Archdiocese of Toledo, of which Fr. Avendaño himself is vice-postulator, who has highlighted his mother on the occasion that “he did not know how to read, but the Gospel was known.”
The Church studies the possible intercession of Jorja Perea in some cases of inexplicable cures of some illnesses.
