Pope Leo XIV will make an apostolic journey to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17, 2026. The twelve-day tour will mark his first visit to Latin America.As reported by the Vatican Press Office, the Pontiff accepted the invitation from the heads of state and ecclesiastical authorities of the three countries. The visit will include several emblematic cities in each nation, though the Holy See stated that the detailed program will be made public in due course.
The first leg of the trip will be in Uruguay, where Leo XIV will stay from November 6 to 8. During those days he will visit Montevideo, Paysandú, and Florida.From November 8 to 11, the Holy Father will travel to Argentina. His itinerary includes visits to Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and the Marian shrine of Our Lady of Luján, one of the country’s main pilgrimage sites.The final leg will take place in Peru, from November 11 to 17. In that country, of which he has been a citizen since 2015, he will visit Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa. The route will take him to the coast, the highlands, and the Peruvian Amazon.
The visit will have special significance for Peru, where Leo XIV carried out extensive pastoral and missionary work before his election as Successor of Peter. Father Robert Prevost lived in Peru for more than two decades, arriving in the country in 1985.His first assignment was Chulucanas, but it was in Trujillo and Chiclayo where his pastoral dedication took deep root. In 2015, after obtaining Peruvian citizenship, he was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo, where he exercised a close and committed leadership.
He remained there until January 2023, when Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.“We received with immense joy the official confirmation of the apostolic visit of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to Peru,” said Monsignor Carlos García Camader, president of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, in a statement published on the episcopate’s website.“His presence among us will be a true gift for our people and an opportunity to renew our faith, strengthen hope and walk together as a Church in service to the Gospel,” the Bishop of Lurín also emphasized.
