Pope Leo XIV will meet with members of the College of Cardinals on June 26-27 for an Extraordinary Consistory focused on the Church’s current situation, global conflicts, the pursuit of peace, and implementing the Synod. The Holy See Press Office released the schedule ahead of the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, marking the second Consistory of Pope Leo’s pontificate after the January gathering of 170 cardinals.
The work will follow a “synodal” method built around prayer, silence, personal reflection, group discussion, and plenary sessions. Cardinals have been asked to maintain confidentiality and avoid press statements during the meetings to preserve fraternal dialogue. Participants will be split into 20 groups: nine with Cardinal electors who are Ordinaries, including Nuncios, and eleven with Curia cardinals and non-electors. Each group will have a president to moderate and a secretary to compile reports.
The Consistory opens Friday, June 26, with Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica led by Pope Leo XIV. In the Paul VI Hall, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re will address the assembly, followed by the Pope’s introduction. The first session asks, “In what kind of world are we called to proclaim the Gospel?” with a biblical meditation by Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś of Krakow. Friday afternoon’s second session, led by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, will examine “The culture of power and the civilization of love” based on Magnifica humanitas.
On Saturday, after Mass presided by Cardinal Re, the third session “Building in the good: the worksites of our time” will be introduced by Cardinal Stephen Brislin of Johannesburg. It will focus on fractures blocking the common good and how local and universal Churches can respond. The final session Saturday afternoon in the New Synod Hall, led by Cardinal Mario Grech, will address “The path of implementing the Synod” and include dialogue with Pope Leo XIV. The Pope will close with a concluding address, followed by the Te Deum and dinner with the cardinals. He will then preside at Mass for Sts. Peter and Paul on Monday, June 29
