The Gospel tells the story of a mother who seeks healing from Jesus for her daughter, who is tormented by an evil spirit. At first Jesus seems to ignore her, and then he refuses to answer her request. Finally he says, “It is not fair to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” Yet she does not give up. She is a fighter, persistent in prayer and unwavering in hope. In the end she not only receives healing for her daughter but also becomes an example of faith for every generation. Her story reminds us that God sometimes seems silent, not because he has abandoned us but because he is drawing us into deeper trust. Her perseverance opens the way for a miracle and invites us to believe always.
First of all, this woman had great faith in Jesus. Nothing prevented her from coming to him. She crossed boundaries of religion, culture, and prejudice because she believed that Jesus alone could help. At the end of their conversation Jesus said, “O woman, great is your faith!” What a beautiful compliment from the Lord. Faith is the door that opens our lives to countless blessings from God. It does not remove every difficulty immediately, but it keeps our hearts firmly fixed on Christ. Jesus would like to repeat those words to each one of us today: “O woman, O man, great is your faith!” May we answer that invitation with confidence every day. Trusting him even when we cannot understand his ways will never disappoint those who seek him sincerely.
Secondly, this Canaanite woman found her way to Jesus when she needed help. She was a Gentile, but that did not prevent her from approaching him. She may have searched for answers elsewhere, yet her deepest need remained unresolved until she met Christ. We should also bring our needs to Jesus because he has the answer to many of our problems. If we carry worries, sickness, disappointments, broken relationships, or uncertainty about the future, it is never too late to place them before him. No burden is too heavy for the Lord, and no prayer offered with faith is ever wasted. He listens with compassion and gives us exactly what we truly need, even if his answer comes differently from our expectations. Therefore let us never stop seeking Jesus daily.
Thirdly, she had an exemplary prayer life. She was not discouraged by the silence of Jesus or by the words of those around her. She continued to pray with humility and perseverance until her prayer was answered. We too should never lose heart or fall into despair when we do not receive an immediate answer from God. Prayer is not about changing God’s heart but about opening our hearts to his will. If your family does not pray together, begin today. A few minutes each day can strengthen your home, deepen your faith, and fill your hearts with God’s peace. Families who kneel together discover that Christ walks with them through every joy and every trial. He never abandons those who faithfully call upon his holy name in trust.
Finally, this woman is an example of a praying parent. Her determination to seek Jesus reveals the depth of her love for her daughter. Parents should pray for their children every day and entrust them to the Lord. Jesus can strengthen, protect, and guide our children through every challenge they face. Bring them to Jesus from their earliest years and help them grow as children of God. If there had not been a mother like Saint Monica, we might never have had Saint Augustine. Let us pray that God may raise many Monicas among us so that our children may become faithful disciples and holy men and women. May this Eucharist renew our relationship with Jesus so that we return home filled with hope, joy, courage, faith, and love.
