Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin has shared words of hope and reassurance regarding Pope Leo XIV, who was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for surgery to remove a confined lung nodule. Speaking to journalists at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Cardinal Parolin expressed his surprise at the sudden health news, describing it as a “bolt from the blue,” but emphasized the Holy Father’s remarkable composure and peace of mind.
The Cardinal noted that he spoke with the Pope calmly on Monday afternoon and praised the serene manner in which the pontiff first announced the upcoming procedure during his Sunday Angelus. While acknowledging initial concern over the unexpected diagnosis, Cardinal Parolin expressed confidence, highlighting that catching the condition early greatly improves the likelihood of a quick and successful resolution. He also pointed to the overwhelming global outpouring of affection as a powerful testament to how deeply the Pope is loved and supported worldwide.
Echoing these sentiments, Cardinal Isao Kikuchi, Archbishop of Tokyo, shared details from a private audience held with the Holy Father just before the surgery. According to Cardinal Kikuchi, the Pope remained in high spirits, describing the procedure as a minor operation and explaining his decision to act immediately to ensure he can still move forward with his upcoming pastoral visit to Latin America. Church leaders and the faithful around the globe continue to accompany the Holy Father with their prayers and affection.
