Pope Leo XIV has urged the global community to pray for peace in Ukraine and to remember the struggles of the people in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. On August 24, 2025, the Pope expressed his closeness to the Ukrainian people, who have been suffering from war for over three years, and encouraged a worldwide prayer initiative for the country. He also highlighted the dire situation in Cabo Delgado, where jihadist attacks have resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced over a million people since 2017.
The Pope’s call for prayer comes as Ukraine celebrates its Independence Day, marking 34 years since its declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. The country has faced significant challenges due to the ongoing conflict, with over 700 places of worship destroyed or damaged and more than 70 pastors and priests killed by Russian troops. The “Global Prayer for Ukraine” initiative, supported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches, aims to bring people together in prayer for peace and protection.
In Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, the situation remains dire, with intensified attacks in recent weeks, particularly in the districts of Chiure and Metuge. Pope Leo XIV has expressed his hope that the country’s leaders will restore security and peace to the region. Despite the severity of the crisis, the international community has largely ignored the situation, prompting the Pope to bring attention to the plight of the people in Cabo Delgado.
In his Angelus address, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of prayer and solidarity with those affected by conflict and violence. He invited the faithful to join him in praying for the people of Ukraine and Mozambique, expressing his hope that through collective efforts, peace and security can be restored to these regions.
