Pope Francis has Granted Plenary Indulgence

Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence to mark the 50th anniversary of Saint John Macias’ canonization. This indulgence is offered to those who participate in Eucharistic celebrations and pilgrimages to churches and sanctuaries under Saint John Macias’ patronage in Peru.

The Dominican Province of San Juan Bautista del PerĂº announced the indulgence, which requires sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions. A plenary indulgence remits all temporal punishment due to sin, allowing the soul to return to its baptismal state.

The Jubilee began on 18 September, Saint John Macias’ feast day, and concludes on 28 September 2025. The inauguration featured a Mass and the opening of the holy door at Lima’s Basilica of the Most Holy Rosary.

Saint John Macias, a Spanish-born Dominican friar, is revered for his patronage of emigrants, his prayers for souls in Purgatory, and his advocacy for orphaned children. He formed significant spiritual friendships with Saint Martin de Porres and Saint John the Baptist.

According to Carlos Fhon, President of the Council of Lay Dominican Fraternities of Peru, Saint John Macias’ legacy enriches Peru’s history of holiness. Fhon highlighted Macias’ journey from Spain to Peru, where he met Saint Martin de Porres, and his spiritual friendship with Saint John the Baptist.

The Jubilee Commission invites all faithful to participate in events honoring Saint John Macias throughout the year.
