October 11: Saint Alexander Sauli

Alexander Sauli was born in 1534 in Milan, Italy. He is called the ‘Apostle of  Corsica’ .After completing his education, he became a member of the Congregation of Barnabites at the age of seventeen. After becoming a priest, he was appointed to teach philosophy and theology at Pavia University. He was also known as a famous orator during that period.

Alexander’s words stirred up the sinful hearts and burned the hearts of many. In 1567, Alexander was elected president of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He had to lead a monastic community that had almost lost its sense of purpose. However, he was able to enlighten the monastic community through planned action plans.

In 1570, Alexander was ordained bishop of the diocese of Alaria in Corsica. He used all his abilities to invigorate the diocese, which was considered a dry land for evangelism. Twenty years of continuous hard work have yielded satisfactory results. Alexander is therefore known as the Apostle of Corsica.

In 1591, Pope Alexander was transferred to Pavia. But for a short time the diocese of Pavia was fortunate to receive the services of Alexander. He died in 1592. He was canonized in 1904.
