Canadian Church Continues Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples

Two years after Pope Francis’ historic visit to Canada, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops reaffirms their commitment to walking in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples. In a letter to “The People of God,” the bishops reflect on the Pope’s message of healing and reconciliation.

The bishops highlight several initiatives undertaken since the Pope’s visit, including, raising $30 million over five years for Indigenous-led projects supporting healing and reconciliation (over half already raised) and providing transparent access to historical records and documentation. Supporting local Indigenous communities in uncovering truths about residential school injustices.

The bishops acknowledge the painful legacy of residential schools and encourage dioceses and Catholics to support Indigenous communities in their pursuit of truth and transparency. They recall Pope Francis’ appeal for firm action and an irreversible commitment to a new path of reconciliation.

The bishops emphasize that the way of reconciliation and hope must be walked together, and they commit to continuing to listen to and support survivors and Indigenous communities on this journey.
