Pope Leo XIV presided over Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday, November 5, to pray for the repose of the souls of seven Cardinals and 136 Bishops who passed away over the past year. Drawing inspiration from Saint Monica’s final words to her sons to remember her at the altar, the Pope underscored that praying for the dead is one of the Church’s fundamental duties and urged the faithful to view the mystery of death without fear.
In his homily, Pope Leo XIV highlighted that prayers for the departed are anchored in the promise of the Resurrection, stating that life in Christ is never lost because it has been redeemed. He explained that praying for the deceased is ultimately a celebration of life rather than an act of mere nostalgia, anchored in the firm trust that Christ has prepared a place for everyone in the Father’s house.
Closing his reflection on the communion of saints, the Pope reminded believers that death does not dissolve spiritual bonds, but transfigures them through Christ’s love. He noted that prayers for the dead foster a two-way communion, encouraging the faithful to continue nurturing these bonds as they journey toward God.
