1193: Repose of Barlaam, who was born in a wealthy family but gave it all away to become a hermit on the Volga River in Russia, where he founded the Khutyn Monastery of Saviour’s Transfiguration. He became most famous after healing a Grand Prince. He had a lot of followers, and his tomb became a popular pilgrimage destination.
1789: In the course of the American Revolution, Father John Carroll appointed the first Roman Catholic bishop in the newly organized and independent United States of America.
1853: Founding of the first Chinese Presbyterian Church in the U.S., in San Francisco, CA.
1881: Christening of William Temple, who later became the Archbishop of Canterbury and who was famous as an advocate of the common man and for being active in social issues.
1905: Demise of George Williams, the founder of the YMCA, which he had founded to offer young men an alternative to the extremely worldly recreations in London. YMCA has spread to the whole world.
1935: Repose of American revivalist Billy Sunday, a baseball player, who had become one of America’s most famous evangelists.
1977: The Barnes Lake Dam burst, following heavy rains In Toccoa Falls, GA, and the resulting flood caused the collapse of the campus of Toccoa Falls Bible Institute belonging to the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Thirty-eight students and instructors also lost their lives in the tragedy.
