Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin has been honored with the Path to Peace Foundation’s award, recognizing his tireless efforts in promoting justice and peace in the world. The award ceremony took place in New York, marking a significant milestone in the Cardinal’s career.
Cardinal Parolin accepted the award on behalf of the Secretariat of State, emphasizing that the honor transcends his personal achievements and embodies the collaborative spirit of the Holy See’s mission. He highlighted the importance of the path laid out by successive Popes in their pursuit of a world without conflict, citing the historic visits of Pope St. Paul VI, Pope St. John Paul II, and Pope Francis to the United Nations.
The Cardinal reflected on the words of past Popes, emphasizing the urgent relevance of their messages today. He cited Pope Paul VI’s call for spiritual and moral renewal, Pope John Paul II’s appeal for humanity to confront its capacity for good and evil, and Pope Benedict XVI’s affirmation of universal and immutable truths underlying human rights. He also referenced Pope Francis’s critique of “throwaway culture” and emphasis on environmental protection and social justice.
Cardinal Parolin noted that this tradition continues with Pope Leo XIV, who has called for a peace that is “disarmed and disarming” and a positive force in a world torn apart by conflict and division. The Cardinal emphasized the significance of the new Pope’s choice of name, highlighting the Church’s social teaching in the context of rapid technological progress.
The award recognizes the Holy See’s ongoing commitment to promoting peace, justice, and human dignity, and serves as a reminder of the importance of collaborative efforts towards a more just and peaceful world.
