Pope Francis’ special message to Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema was delivered by the Apostolic Nuncio to Zambia, Archbishop Gianluca Perici, during a meeting at the State House on 31 December 2024. President Hichilema expressed gratitude for the Catholic Church’s significant contributions to Zambia’s debt reduction and economic recovery efforts, which align with the country’s goals. He specifically thanked Pope Francis for his leadership in calling for debt cancellation for developing countries, a move that would greatly benefit Zambia, which has been experiencing debt distress since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The President also highlighted the Church’s vital role in education, healthcare, and social welfare in Zambia, emphasizing the government’s commitment to collaborating with religious institutions to ensure the well-being of citizens. In his message, Pope Francis encouraged cooperation between the Church and the Zambian Government, emphasizing peace, harmony, and debt cancellation. The message was particularly significant, as 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Zambia. President Hichilema welcomed the message and reiterated his appreciation for the warm welcome he received during his visit to the Vatican in 2022.
