World Food Day: Pope Urges Leaders to Listen to Those at the End of the Food Chain

Pope Francis marked World Food Day with a powerful message, urging global leaders to listen to those at the end of the food chain, such as small farmers and families, who are directly involved in feeding people. He emphasized that solidarity, justice, and a transformation of food systems are necessary to ensure everyone has access to nutritious and affordable food.

The Pope also spoke out against the massive spending on weapons and armaments, suggesting that these funds could be better used to combat hunger and support healthcare and education. “War brings out the worst in humanity: selfishness, violence, and dishonesty,” he stated, calling for a shift in priorities.

In his message to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Pope Francis stressed the importance of engaging marginalized groups in decision-making processes and considering their needs when designing food policies and programs. He reminded leaders that justice and fraternity should guide their efforts, citing the Gospel teaching “Whatever you want others to do for you, do the same for them” (Mt 7:12).

Pope Francis praised FAO’s initiative to transform food systems, advocating for sustainability, inclusivity, and diversity in food production. He emphasized the need for a broader vision that values social and cultural dimensions, ensuring food systems provide a variety of nutritious, affordable, healthy, and sustainable foods for all.

The Pope also highlighted the significance of integral ecology, stressing that addressing the food crisis must be done in harmony with environmental protection and upholding human dignity. “Our planet should be a garden open to peaceful coexistence,” he wrote, emphasizing the need for ethical commitment.

Finally, Pope Francis reaffirmed the Church’s dedication to eradicating hunger and poverty, expressing support for FAO and other global initiatives aimed at ensuring food for all. “The Church will continue to contribute tenaciously so that everyone can have adequate food in both quantity and quality,” he concluded.
