Wednesday of the 2nd Week of Advent: 11 December 2024, Is. 40: 25-31, Mt. 11: 28-30 Love Yoke

Fr. Jerry Vallomkunnel MCBS

Just like a yoke binds two animals 'Yoke of Torah' binds a Jew to God. But Jewish society made it burdensome by attaching customs and practices to the law of love. For the Orthodox Jew, religion was a matter of burdens, namely, 613 Mosaic laws and thousands of oral interpretations, which dictated every aspect of life.

Jesus does not mean that his burden is easy to carry, but that it is laid on us in love. This burden is meant to be carried in love, and love makes even the heaviest burden light.  By following Jesus, one will find peace, rest, and real refreshment. We are burdened with many things:  business, concerns about jobs, marriage, money, health, children, security, old age ,  and a thousand other things.

'Yoke of Jesus' is simple and positive because it is all about love of God and Neighbour. Any yoke or burdens we carry our own becomes burdensome quickly. But while we try to carry them with Lord in the context of the practice of Love of God and Neighbour, everything becomes easy and positive! Amen.
