Vatican Urges Global Support for Haiti Amidst Escalating Violence

The Vatican is calling on the international community to support Haiti as the country struggles with an alarming surge in violence, fueled by armed criminal groups operating with impunity. Pope Francis is closely monitoring the situation and has expressed his desire for greater global commitment to peace in Haiti, according to Monsignor Juan Antonio Cruz Serrano, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Organization of American States (OAS).

Haiti has been plagued by relentless violence for months, forcing residents to flee their homes in search of safety. The Catholic Church has not been spared, with priests, nuns, and other clergy members facing the consequences of this dire situation. Archbishop Cruz condemned the ongoing violence, emphasizing the need for collective action to protect the rights and dignity of all Haitians.

The Holy See applauds the recent approval of a draft resolution supporting Haiti’s request for a UN peacekeeping operation. This initiative aims to address the root causes of conflicts through coordinated political, social, and developmental efforts. Bishop Cruz highlighted the crucial work of Haitian dioceses and Catholic institutions, such as Caritas International and Aid to the Church in Need, in supporting the most vulnerable populations.
