Vatican and Russia Discuss Ukraine War After Deadly Drone Strike

The Vatican and Russia have engaged in a significant dialogue regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, prompted by a recent drone attack in Kharkiv that resulted in civilian casualties. Bishop Paul Gallagher, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation to discuss global relations, with a particular focus on the Ukraine war.

The two officials deliberated on the situation in Ukraine, exploring initiatives to halt military actions and promote peace. Bishop Gallagher emphasized the Vatican’s commitment to continuing humanitarian efforts, particularly in prisoner exchange matters. The conversation also touched on matters related to religious life and the situation of the Catholic Church in the Russian Federation.

The drone strike in Kharkiv, which killed at least five civilians and injured 32 others, has exacerbated tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Both countries have accused each other of continued attacks on key infrastructure, including energy facilities and hospitals, amidst US President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker a ceasefire agreement.

In September 2024, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin in New York, where they discussed human rights and the release of Ukrainian Greek Catholic priests from prison. The Vatican has consistently called for the release of all prisoners of war, access to humanitarian aid, and a permanent ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
