3.2 million children under 5 in Afghanistan are on the verge of severe malnutrition in the coming months, the study reports of two United Nations Agencies have raised. The representatives of UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF and the World Food Programme visited Afghanistan for a two days visit in the country and they raised their alarming voice in light of it.
The people are facing the scarcity of water, food, basic health and nutrition services, said by Herve Ludovic of UNICEF and Mary Ellen McGroarty of WFP. Afghan children and their families are bearing the brunt of years of conflict and the current economic crisis. The various programme’s representatives warned that around 14 million people in the country are facing acute food insecurity and an estimated 3.2 million children under the age of five are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition by the end of this year. Due to the shortage of medical supplies Kabul’s Indira Gandhi Children Hospital is closed. People cannot afford a meal a day. They will soon face an acute health crisis soon, the medical experts warn.
