1177: Pope Alexander III writes a letter to Prester John, a mythical Patriarch, Presbyter and supposedly Christian king over much of central Asia. The pope entrusted this to Philip, his physician, to be delivered to John, but Philip didn’t live long to hand over the letter.
1435: Passing away of Savvaty, who played a vital role in establishing the famous Solovetsky monastery, after having settled as a hermit on one of the almost uninhabitable islands of the White Sea in northern Russia.
1557: Martyrdom of Philippina Graveron, a young Huguenot widow, in Paris.
1604: The Jesuits establish their first college in Colombia – Seminario de San Bartolome.
1660: Repose of St. Vincent de Paul, who spent his whole life serving the poor. He had also founded the first Confraternity of Charity, the Congregation of the Mission, and the Daughters of Charity (the first non-monastic order for women which completely dedicated itself to care of the sick and poor).
1674: Demise of Thomas Traherne, a gifted poet whose compositions, although regarded worthless during his lifetime, came to be recognized as among the best of the seventeenth century minor poets, full with childlike delight in God’s works.
1680: Iyasu I, known as Iyasu the Great, the emperor of Ethiopia, convenes a church council. He deposed the leaders of a sect, which he disliked, during the same.
1715: Demise of Dr. Thomas Burnet, an English theologian, and the author of Sacred Theory of the Earth, a popular work in which he tried to explain Noah’s flood by describing the antediluvian world as a hollow, oval-shaped object filled with water.
1839: G. Tradescant Lay, an English physician, asserts at the first annual meeting of the Medical Missionary Society in Canton, China, that he will try to create a system to freely give the benefits of modern medicine to the poor people all over the world.
1947: Creation of the Church of South India at Madras by the merger of the Anglicans, the Methodists, and the South India United Church.
1995: Demise of Missionary Sam Sasser, who served as a missionary in the Marshall Islands and Samoa.
