1535: Miles Coverdale, a London printer, publishes an English version of the Bible. He later served in two other translation committees, and was also popular as a Lutheran preacher.
1669: Demise of Dutch painter Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn, who is known as the “painter of the soul” because of his unsurpassed Christian art.
1806: Repose of Samuel Horsley, bishop of St. Asaph diocese in Wales. He was the author of many scientific works in which he defended the fundamental Christian teachings.
1848: Repose of John Hunt, a missionary to the Fiji Islands; at his death his converts pleaded with God to take a number of them rather than him.
1864: Demise of Theodore Fliedner, a Protestant philanthropist and a pioneer in training deaconesses.
1927: John Sung, a Chinese student in America, sails to Shanghai with the mission of evangelizing his homeland. He won 100,000 believers for Christ in fifteen years.
1965: Paul VI arrives in New York City, to become the first pope in history to visit the United States. While speaking at the UN, the Pope published a document exonerating the Jews of all blame in the death of Christ.
1970: Catherine of Siena declared a doctor of the church by Pope Paul VI.
1972: Bolaji Idowu becomes the president of the Methodist Church in Nigeria. During his tenure, he conducted a revision of the church’s constitution, making it autonomous, and unified the church with the nation’s Zion Methodist Church.
1994: Two Egyptian Christians, Ageeb Sami Yacoub and Ameer Sami Yacoub, are executed for having refused to pay protection money to Muslims.
