829: Passing away of the eastern emperor Michael II, “the Stammerer.” Although an iconoclast, he had tried to moderate the rivalry between factions, and even freed some religious leaders who had been imprisoned for their devotion to icons. Unfortunately, he lost parts of his empire to Muslim attacks, also because his reign was weakened by insurrection.
1532: Reformer William Farel reaches Geneva with the mission to convince the city to join the Reformation, which succeeded in sixteen months.
1535: Jacques Cartier arrives a place in Canada which he later named Montreal.
1656: Connecticut banishes Quakers, because of the threats from their liberal theology.
1770: The funeral service for George Whitefield takes place at the Old South First Presbyterian Church in Newburyport, attended by a large crowd.
1782: Founding of the Baptist Missionary Society in London, England, by William Carey at the age of 21. He later became England’s first great Protestant missionary to India.
1792: William Carey, John Rylands, and ten other Baptist pastors form the Particular-Baptist Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Heathens. Carey was sent to India.
1919: Johanna Veenstra, the first missionary of the Christian Reformed Church for Nigeria, leaves New York for England from where she was later trans-shipped to Lagos. She played a vital role in her Church in Nigeria.
1930: Premier of the radio program Lutheran Hour on CBS.
1938: Repose of Hiero-schemamonk Theodosius of Karoulia at Mount Athos, who was famous as a strict and prayerful ascetic.
1984: Incorporation of Grace Ministries International (GMI)Â in Grand Rapids, MI. GMI engages in establishing churches in nearly a dozen overseas countries.
