570: (probable date) Passing away of Gildas, believed to be a former abbot, who gave us the earliest history available about the British Celts.

993: Ulrich, the prince-Bishop of Augsburg in the Holy Roman Empire, was canonized at a Lateran Synod, by Pope John XV.  St. Ulrich became the first individual in Roman Catholic history to be formally canonized.

1430: (probable date) Death of Andrei Rublev, considered the greatest medieval Russian painter of icons and Christian frescoes, at Andronikov Monastery.

1499: Birth of Katherine von Bora, the former German nun who later became Martin Luther’s wife in 1525, when he was 41 and she just 26. She bore him 3 sons and 3 daughters. Her death in 1552 followed six years after her husband’s in 1546.

1663: Death of Robert Sanderson, bishop of Lincoln, who on siding with the Royalists, was deprived of his living after the Puritans took power during the Commonwealth.

1780: American Methodist bishop Francis Asbury states in his journal: ‘My soul is more at rest from the tempter when I am busily employed.’

1877: Death of Sarah Doremus in New York. She is called the “Mother of Missions” due to her strenuous efforts on behalf of foreign missions.

1918: Death of Sarah Dunn Clarke in Chicago, who along with her husband founded the Pacific Garden Mission – an orphanage. She was known its “mother.”

1921: The Congregational Holiness Church (CHC) was formally organized in the US, following a split in the previous year with the Pentecostal Holiness Church.

1929: Death of Charles Fox Parham, early American Pentecostal innovator and theologian.

1967: Soviet President Nikolai Podgorny visited Pope Paul VI at the Vatican, the first meeting in history between a Roman Catholic pontiff and the head of a Communist state.

2005: Bulus Marwa becomes the pastor of Victory Baptist Church, Alamuderi in Nigeria, where he preached until December 24, 2010, when he was murdered by members of the militant Muslim group Boko Haram along with several other Christians.
