1380: Passing away of Catherine of Siena in Rome, a Dominican tertiary and mystic, who could influence world events with her convincing holy character and through her intermittent contacts with the authorities.
1529: Reformers do away with the catholic Holy Mass in Basel, Switzerland.
1607: Establishment of the first Anglican (Episcopal) church in the American colonies at Cape Henry, Virginia.
1743: Repose of Charles-Irénée Castel, abbé de Saint-Pierre in Paris, author numerous works which called for political, legal, and economic reforms in the society, and who had suggested the creation of an international peace-keeping organization.
1749: Demise of John Philip Boehm, the founder of the German Reformed Church in the U.S.
1764: John Newton, an earlier slave and later a convert, is ordained a deacon in the Church of England.
1834: Birth of Joseph H. Gilmore, an American Baptist clergyman and a Hebrew instructor, who is, however, better known for his hymn: “He Leadeth Me, O Blessed Thought.”
1849: Major Thomas Jackson, a General in the American Civil war, confesses to Christ by public baptism at St. John’s Protestant Episcopal Church Fort Hamilton, New York. Jackson exhibited great courage, which earned him the nickname “Stonewall” and also cared for the spiritual well being of the soldiers under his command.
1866: Imad-ud-din, a Muslim scholar from India converts to Christianity and becomes a famous preacher, author and translator.
1882: Demise of John Nelson Darby, a biblical scholar and the founder of the Plymouth Brethren.
1933: Dawson Trotman begins his mission work in San Pedro, CA, sowing the seeds for the formation of the evangelical mission ‘the Navigators’ in 1943 with its headquarters in Colorado Springs, CO.
1945: U.S. troops liberate the oldest of the Nazi concentration camps – Dachau – in Bavaria, West Germany , in which nearly 32,000 prisoners (mostly Jews) perished in 12 years.
1952: Demise of Samuel M. Zwemer, an American Dutch Reformed missionary, who had served in Egypt between 1890-1905, helping to found the Arabian Mission in 1888. He also authored over 50 volumes during his life, mostly in Arabic.
