428: Nestorius becomes the Patriarch of Constantinople. He later refused to accept the concept “Theotokos” (God-bearer) to describe the Virgin Mary and thus became a heretic.
1816: Richard Allen, church reformer, is elected the first bishop of the newly-created African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Philadelphia.
1868: The first complete public performance of Brahms’ Requiem at the cathedral of Bremen on this Good Friday wins it the recognition as a masterpiece.
1945: U.S. Armed forces free the imprisoned at the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald, Germany. Nearly 57,000 prisoners – mostly Jews – were murdered at the gas chambers of Buchenwald in eight-year time.
1952: Chinese Christian watchman Nee is arrested in Shanghai; he was famous in the West through the publication of his books.
1970: The Russian Orthodox Church in America is granted autocephalic independence by its Mother church, the Russian Orthodox Church. Having its headquarters in Syosset, New York, it has approximately one million members today.
1997: Death of Betty Greene, a Women’s Air Force Service pilot, during World War II in Seattle. She was the founder of the Christian Airmen’s Missionary Fellowship in 1945, later known as the Missionary Aviation Fellowship. After her retirement, she flew for Wycliffe Bible Translators all over the world.
