1189: The Peace of Strasbourg is signed by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa of Germany and Pope Clement III, settling the long standing differences between them.

1253: Passing away of Bishop Richard of Chichester, who underwent persecution under King Henry III but was beloved by his people.

1327: Pope John XXII issues the bull “Licet iuxta doctrinam” condemning the writings of Marsilus of Padua and John of Jandun.

1528: German reformer Adolf Clarenbach is arrested in Cologne for teaching Protestant doctrines. Clarenbach was burned at the stake for his faith the following year.

1685: Pope Gregory XIII bans reading of Scotus Erigena’s De Divisione Naturae.

1759: John Newton, Anglican clergyman and hymn-writer, exhorted in a letter, “I believe that love to God, and to man for God’s sake, is the essence of religion and the fulfilling of the law.”

1769: Death of Pietist preacher and hymn-writer Gerhard Tersteegen in MĂĽlheim (in the Ruhr), best-known for his hymn “Thou hidden love of God.”

1826: Demise of Reginald Heber in India, whose hymns were published posthumously, such as “Holy, Holy, Holy” and “From Greenland’s Icy Mountains.”

1971: TĂłmaz Phiri and his wife Nadies Kampione who were Nazarene evangelists, escape from Mozambique to Malawi with their children. In spite of being refugees, they started four churches there which flourished in the following years.
