The Whereabouts of Bishop Rolando Álvarez is Still Unknown after 40 Days

The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (CENIDH) denounced that the whereabouts of Monsignor Rolando Álvarez are still unknown after 40 days of the sentence of 26 years and 4 months in prison.

The Bishop of Matagalpa (Nicaragua), Msgr. Rolando Álvarez, was sentenced on February 10 to 26 years and 4 months in jail, accused of being a “traitor to the homeland.” So far the authorities have not given a reason for his whereabouts of him.

The Prelate, who refused to be deported along with 222 other political prisoners sent to the United States, would be in a maximum security cell in the “La Modelo” prison.

However, it is not clear what his exact location is and the authorities have not provided information on his current situation.

CENIDH posted a video on its Twitter account in which it recalls that “40 days have passed since the last time Daniel Ortega confirmed on national television that he had sent Monsignor to the Jorge Navarro prison,” on 21 March.

For CENIDH, with these actions, the “Ortega-Murillo regime subjects Monsignor Rolando Álvarez to a situation of forced disappearance.”
Rosario Murillo is the wife of the dictator Daniel Ortega, in power since 2007.

“His physical and psychological health situation is completely unknown,” says CENIDH, which at the same time warns that “Mons. Rolando Álvarez is in danger of death”.

The Jorge Navarro penitentiary center or the “La Modelo” prison has been a frequent destination for political prisoners in Nicaragua, a place where they have suffered a series of human rights violations.
