The Vatican has released a postage stamp for Easter 2022 made especially for the occasion by the Spanish artist Raúl Berzosa.
This is the second time that a painting by Berzosa is used for the Vatican’s Easter postage stamp, in 2018, the Holy See used his canvas “Christ Risen”.
Among other works by the painter Raúl Berzosa used by the Vatican for postage stamps is a painting of Pope Francis used on the occasion of the celebration of his 80 years of life, in 2016. Also in 2019, a work by the Spanish artist was used for wedding priestly gold medals of the Holy Father.
In 2021, a work by Raúl Berzosa was used for the Vatican postage stamp on the occasion of the V Centenary of the Conversion of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
The painting used this year on the postage stamp for the celebration of Easter is inspired by the Byzantine icon of the descent into the underworld, in which Christ is represented taking the progenitors of humanity, Adam and Eve, by the hand.
Berzosa indicated that “the time for making the canvas has been approximately one month, although there was previous work on ideas and sketches before capturing the final result in oil.”
The Spanish artist stressed that “I have always kept in mind that my paintings should serve as tools to evangelize, whether it be stamps, books, or the importance of social networks. It is a way to connect with thousands of people.”
