The President of the USCCB Comments on Trump’s “Deeply Troubling” Executive Directives

US bishops’ president Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio called Trump orders on migration, death penalty etc., were ‘deeply troubling.’ He said in a statement that while some of the Executive Orders’ provisions “can be seen in a more positive light,” others were “deeply troubling” and would “have negative consequences.”

“Those focused on the treatment of immigrants and refugees, foreign aid, expansion of the death penalty, and the environment” were the specific topics that Archbishop Broglio took issue with. However, he commended the actions for “realizing the truth about every human being as male or female.”

Many of the subjects covered by the first set of executive orders, according to Archbishop Broglio, head of the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services, “are matters on which the Church has much to offer.”

Archbishop Broglio emphasized that neither the Catholic Church nor the USCCB is “associated with any political party.” He stated that regardless of who is in the White House or controls Congress, the Church’s teachings stay the same, and that we hope that the nation’s leaders will rethink actions that not only undermine the dignity of a few, but of all people.
