The Prayers that Pope Francis will Recite at the Funeral of Benedict XVI

Pope Francis will recite two moving prayers on 5 January before the burial of the mortal remains of Pope Emeritus.

According to the program provided by the Vatican, before concluding the Eucharist in Saint Peter’s Square, Pope Francis will preside over the traditional rite of the “ Ultima Commendatio et valedictio ” (Last praise and farewell).

Then, the body of Benedict XVI will be buried in the Vatican grottoes, in the first place that was the tomb of Saint John Paul II.

Benedict XVI will be buried in the chasuble he wore at a World Youth Day

The two prayers will be pronounced by the Holy Father in Latin.

Next, we publish the translation of each sentence:

“Dear brothers and sisters, in celebrating the holy mysteries we have opened our minds and hearts to happy hope: with the same confidence we give our last greetings and entrust to God, the merciful and loving Father, Pope Emeritus Benedict.

The God of our Fathers, through Jesus Christ, his only Son, in the Holy Spirit, who is Lord and gives life, grant the Pontiff Emeritus Benedict, rescued from death, to praise him in the heavenly Jerusalem, waiting for his mortal body rises on the last day.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Apostles and Salvation of the Roman people, intercede before the Eternal, so that she may show the face of her Son Jesus to Pope Emeritus Benedict, and console the Church, which is a pilgrim in time, waiting for the coming of the Lord.”

Finally, Pope Francis will recite:

“Clement Father, we entrust to your mercy Pope Emeritus Benedict that you have constituted the successor of Peter and pastor of the Church, intrepid announcer of your word and faithful dispenser of the divine mysteries.

Admit him, we beg you, in the sanctuary of heaven, so that he may enjoy eternal glory with all your chosen ones. We thank you, Lord, for all the benefits that in your goodness you have granted him for the good of your people.

Give us the comfort of faith and the strength of hope.
