The Church of Our Lady of the Pillar, situated on West Street in Valletta, Malta, is a radiant sanctuary dedicated to the first apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint James. Commissioned by the Aragonese Knights, this 17th-century church serves as a testament to the Knights’ devotion to the Virgin Mary and their commitment to spreading Christianity.
After the construction of Auberge d’Aragon, the Langue of Aragon recognized the need for a chapel to serve the knights and the local community. The church was built in 1670 by Ballius Fra Felix Inniquez de Ayerbe and became his final resting place in 1691. Following damage from an earthquake in 1693, Grandmaster Ramon Perellos y Roccaful patronized the church’s rebuilding.
Renowned architect Romano Carapecchia remodelled the chapel in 1718, incorporating High Baroque elements. The façade features a Composite order design, with a triangular pediment stretching across the entire width. The interior boasts elegant sculptures, notably the reredos behind the altar, adorned with gold and angels. The church also houses paintings by prominent Maltese artists, including Stefano Erardi’s titular painting depicting Mary’s apparition to Saint James.
Mary’s title of Mediatrix emphasizes her role in the Incarnation and Redemption. The first Marian apparition occurred when Mary, still alive, appeared to Apostle James in Spain, promising support in his mission. This event led to the construction of the Cathedral-Basilica of Zaragoza, Spain’s National Marian Shrine.
The National Marian Shrine of Malta is dedicated to Our Lady of Mellieħa, housing the ancient Icon of the Theotokos Hodegetria. Both sanctuaries are part of the European Marian Network. Our Lady of the Pillar is also the patron of Spain and Hispanic peoples, with October 12 commemorating Christopher Columbus’s first sighting of land and the first Mass in the Americas.
In 2007, Heritage Malta assumed responsibility for the church, undertaking substantial restoration and conservation works. Today, the church is open by appointment, offering a glimpse into its rich history and beauty.
