Syrian Christians Seek Greater Security Guarantees Amid Political Shift

More than a month after Syria’s political shift, the country’s Christian community is expressing relief and seeking further security guarantees. Initial assurances for their safety and security have been provided by the de facto government, but Christians are seeking more concrete guarantees. Opinions differ on what form these guarantees should take, with some believing the Church should remain their primary safeguard, while others think laity should also play a crucial role.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarch, John X, and the Latin apostolic vicar, Bishop Hanna Jallouf, are the most visible Christian leaders in Syria. Bishop Jallouf recently visited his hometown and parish, where he was warmly received. However, a meeting between church leaders and representatives with Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the head of Syria’s new administration, was notable for the absence of three patriarchs based in Damascus.

Despite this, Al-Sharaa expressed admiration for Pope Francis, calling him a man of peace and commending his advocacy and actions for the people. The Christian community has also witnessed criticism of the patriarch for the absence of Syria’s new flag in the patriarchal salon, which escalated to accusations and demands for his resignation. This attack was widely condemned by both the Church and the public.
