The body of Saint Teresa of Jesus is being displayed for public veneration in the Basilica of the Annunciation in Alba de Tormes, Spain, her hometown, until May 25. This rare occasion marks only the third time in over four centuries that her body has been exposed for public veneration, with the previous displays occurring in 1760 and 1914.
The current display is part of Pope Francis’ authorization for the recognition of the saint’s body, which led to the opening of the tomb on two occasions in 2024 and 2025. For the past four months, the body has been kept in a temporary urn in the cloister of the Alba de Tormes monastery.
During the veneration period, several notable events will take place, including Masses presided over by prominent Catholic figures such as Archbishop Luis Argüello, Bishop Bernardito Cleopas Auza, and Cardinal Antonio MarÃa Rouco Varela. Additionally, a Holy Hour and a procession with the image of Saint Teresa of Jesus will be held.
The official closing of the veneration will be on 25 May, with a solemn Mass presided over by Father Miguel Márquez Calle, general of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, concelebrated by bishops from various Spanish dioceses. This historic event provides a unique opportunity for the faithful to pay their respects to Saint Teresa of Jesus, a revered figure in the Catholic Church.
