Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI will be entombed in the original tomb of Saint John Paul II on 5 January after the funeral services presided over by Pope Francis.
Matteo Bruni, director of the Vatican Press Office confirmed this on 2 January.
According to Vatican News, Benedict XVI will be placed in the same tomb where the pilgrim Pope originally rested in the Vatican caves, in St. Peter’s Basilica.
In 2011, in view of his beatification, John Paul II was transferred to the main nave of the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican.
Since May 1, 2011, pilgrims who come to the Vatican Basilica can venerate his tomb under the altar of the chapel of San Sebastian.
