The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City has become the home of two precious relics of Carlo Acutis, a young Italian blessed who is set to be canonized on 27 April 2025. The relics, a lock of his hair and one of his sports shirts, were enthroned in the Marian sanctuary on 8 December 2024, during a day of prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
According to Father Gerardo Pérez Gómez, archpriest and vice-rector of the Basilica, the relics were donated by Carlo’s parents, who considered it significant that a relic of Saint José Sánchez del RÃo, a young Mexican martyr, was also displayed in the temple. The priest noted that Carlo’s parents were moved to see many young people seeking the intercession of Saint José Sánchez del RÃo and wanted their son to be present alongside him.
The relics are now located on the right side of the temple, near the confessionals and next to the door leading to the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Father Pérez Gómez highlighted the spiritual legacy left by Carlo Acutis, which includes his love for the Eucharist, charity, and devotion to the sacraments and the Rosary. The priest emphasized that Carlo’s life was a testament to the fact that holiness is possible in everyday life, even for young people in today’s world.
Carlo Acutis’ story is a remarkable one. Despite coming from a well-off family, he lived a simple life, giving away most of his possessions and using his time to serve others. His love for the Eucharist was particularly noteworthy, and he made it a point to confess regularly and attend Mass frequently. Father Pérez Gómez noted that Carlo’s use of modern technology, such as the internet and cell phones, was not a hindrance to his holiness, but rather a tool that he used to spread the Gospel and serve others.
The enshrinement of Carlo Acutis’ relics in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a significant event, one that highlights the importance of this young blessed’s life and legacy. As his canonization approaches, it is clear that Carlo Acutis will continue to inspire and guide young people around the world, reminding them that holiness is possible in everyday life.
