A reading from the Second Book of Kings
2 Kgs 5:1-15abĀ
Naaman, the army commander of the king of Aram,
was highly esteemed and respected by his master,
for through him the LORD had brought victory to Aram.
But valiant as he was, the man was a leper.
Now the Arameans had captured in a raid on the land of Israel
a little girl, who became the servant of Naamanās wife.
āIf only my master would present himself to the prophet in Samaria,ā
she said to her mistress, āhe would cure him of his leprosy.ā
Naaman went and told his lord
just what the slave girl from the land of Israel had said.
āGo,ā said the king of Aram.
āI will send along a letter to the king of Israel.ā
So Naaman set out, taking along ten silver talents,
six thousand gold pieces, and ten festal garments.
To the king of Israel he brought the letter, which read:
āWith this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you,
that you may cure him of his leprosy.ā
When he read the letter,
the king of Israel tore his garments and exclaimed:
āAm I a god with power over life and death,
that this man should send someone to me to be cured of leprosy?
Take note! You can see he is only looking for a quarrel with me!ā
When Elisha, the man of God,
heard that the king of Israel had torn his garments,
he sent word to the king:
āWhy have you torn your garments?
Let him come to me and find out
that there is a prophet in Israel.ā
Naaman came with his horses and chariots
and stopped at the door of Elishaās house.
The prophet sent him the message:
āGo and wash seven times in the Jordan,
and your flesh will heal, and you will be clean.ā
But Naaman went away angry, saying,
āI thought that he would surely come out and stand there
to invoke the LORD his God,
and would move his hand over the spot,
and thus cure the leprosy.
Are not the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar,
better than all the waters of Israel?
Could I not wash in them and be cleansed?ā
With this, he turned about in anger and left.
But his servants came up and reasoned with him.
āMy father,ā they said,
āif the prophet had told you to do something extraordinary,
would you not have done it?
All the more now, since he said to you,
āWash and be clean,ā should you do as he said.ā
So Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times
at the word of the man of God.
His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
He returned with his whole retinue to the man of God.
On his arrival he stood before him and said,
āNow I know that there is no God in all the earth,
except in Israel.ā
From the Gospel according to Matthew
Mt 18:21-35
Peter approached Jesus and asked him,
“Lord, if my brother sins against me,
how often must I forgive him?
As many as seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.
That is why the Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king
who decided to settle accounts with his servants.
When he began the accounting,
a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount.
Since he had no way of paying it back,
his master ordered him to be sold,
along with his wife, his children, and all his property,
in payment of the debt.
At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’
Moved with compassion the master of that servant
let him go and forgave him the loan.
When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants
who owed him a much smaller amount.
He seized him and started to choke him, demanding,
‘Pay back what you owe.’
Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’
But he refused.
Instead, he had him put in prison
until he paid back the debt.
Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened,
they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master
and reported the whole affair.
His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant!
I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to.
Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant,
as I had pity on you?’
Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers
until he should pay back the whole debt.
So will my heavenly Father do to you,
unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”
