Pope pleads for peace in Congo

Pope Francis, during his weekly General Audience, has called for prayers for civilians in Goma, a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as rebels take control amid escalating violence. He urged local authorities and the international community to work towards peaceful resolutions to the conflict. The situation in Goma has worsened, prompting the Pope to ask all parties to stop hostilities and protect civilians. He also expressed concern over riots in the capital, Kinshasa, where protesters targeted embassies of nations they believe are involved in the conflict.

In recent days, M23 rebels have intensified their fight against government forces in Goma, leading to the capture of the airport and increasing violence. Reports indicate that shelling has damaged hospitals, including a neonatal unit, causing civilian deaths. Thousands have fled their homes, adding to the existing displacement crisis, with many now in urgent need of humanitarian aid. Goma’s hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties, and medical teams are struggling to provide care due to space shortages.
