Opening the new pastoral year at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Pope Leo XIV called on the Diocese of Rome to adopt a process of “pastoral evaluation” rather than introducing new programs. Grounding his reflection in the Gospel account of Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb, the Pope encouraged the local Church to slow down, review past efforts, and focus on meaningful engagement with both regular parishioners and those outside Church life under the principle: “do less and do it better.”
The Pope outlined three main priorities for assessing diocesan activity: facilitating genuine personal encounters with Christ, fostering welcoming and supportive community relationships, and actively serving the city of Rome. Across all three areas, he emphasized the importance of continuous faith formation, urging communities to make individuals feel known by name and to give young people dedicated time and attentive listening.
Addressing clergy, Pope Leo XIV noted that evaluation should lighten burdens rather than add to them. He reminded priests that leadership involves fostering communion and trusting lay responsibilities rather than trying to do everything themselves. Concluding his address, he announced approval to initiate the cause for sainthood for Don Luigi Di Liegro, founder of the Roman Caritas, pointing to his legacy of serving the poor as an inspiring model leading toward the Jubilee of the Redemption in 2033.
