Pope Leo XIV is set to obtain a new Peruvian national identity document (DNI) after updating his personal information with the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC). The Pope received four RENIEC registrars at the Vatican on 30 May, who took a new photograph of him and collected the necessary information for the updated document. The new DNI will feature the Pope’s Vatican address, replacing his previous address in Chiclayo, Peru, where he served as bishop.
This update is part of the Peruvian government’s rollout of the electronic DNI 3.0, which boasts 64 security elements and allows for digital voting, remote access to digital services, and online commerce. Pope Leo XIV had previously acquired Peruvian nationality in 2015 and obtained his first DNI, and later upgraded to an electronic DNI in 2016. The new document will not require renewal due to his age.
