Pope Leo XIV to Give “Conclave Bonus” to 5,000 Vatican Workers

Pope Leo XIV has reinstated the traditional “conclave bonus” for Vatican employees, a gesture of gratitude toward staff who worked during the sede vacante period. Approximately 5,000 employees of the Roman Curia and Vatican City State institutions will receive an extra 500 euros in their June paychecks. This custom, revived by Pope Leo XIV, is seen as a token of appreciation for the hard work and dedication of Vatican staff during the transition period between popes.

The bonus applies to employees across various Vatican departments, including the Vatican Museums, Library, Pharmacy, and Media, as well as staff working in the Vatican’s bookstore, clothing stores, gas stations, and post office. This move comes after Pope Francis had temporarily suspended the tradition in 2013, redirecting the funds to papal charities instead.

In a meeting with Vatican employees earlier this month, Pope Leo XIV expressed his high regard for their contributions, saying that working in the Roman Curia means keeping the memory of the Apostolic See alive. He praised their commitment and faith, comparing faith and prayer to “salt for food” that imparts flavor to their work.

The “conclave bonus” tradition dates back to previous papal transitions, with Pope Benedict XVI granting a 1,000-euro bonus to employees after the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005. Under Pope Francis, some employees with three or more children are already receiving a monthly 300-euro bonus, approved in January 2025.
