Pope Leo XIV has sent a letter to the Bishops of France as they gathered in Lourdes for their autumn plenary assembly, expressing his heartfelt gratitude for his recent Apostolic Journey. Read following the opening address by Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, President of the French Bishops’ Conference, the Pope’s message thanked the episcopate, civil authorities, and the faithful for their effort in making his visit an unforgettable experience of unity and faith.
Addressing the central themes of the Bishops’ assembly, the Holy Father emphasized the critical role of Catholic education in developing the whole person—spiritually, intellectually, morally, and socially. In light of recent youth protests across France regarding future prospects, Pope Leo urged the Church to listen closely to younger generations and support them through sound formation, encouraging their active and constructive engagement in society and politics.
To strengthen the spiritual life of the faithful, particularly catechumens and neophytes, the Pope called on the French episcopate to promote the lives and teachings of the nation’s saints. He noted that the diverse witnesses of these holy figures make holiness accessible to everyone and serve as an essential source of inspiration and strength for modern believers.
Finally, Pope Leo addressed the ongoing work to support victims of sexual violence and coercive control within the Church, referencing his meeting with victims during his visit. He encouraged the Bishops to pursue their efforts guided by charity and truth, stressing that the Church must remain a safe haven where survivors can find comfort and healing. Entrusting their plenary work to Our Lady of Lourdes, he prayed for holiness to continue flourishing throughout France.
