Pope Leo XIV offered his heartfelt thanks to well-wishers and medical professionals following his recent discharge from the Gemelli Policlinic in Rome. Speaking at the conclusion of the Angelus prayer on Sunday, the Holy Father acknowledged the overwhelming spiritual backing he received throughout his hospital stay, remarking, “I have truly felt your support. Thank you!”
The Pope spent several days at Gemelli Hospital after undergoing surgery on Tuesday to remove a cancerous nodule from his lung. Expressing deep appreciation for those involved in his recovery, he extended a “special gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and all the staff at the Gemelli Policlinic.” Before leaving the medical facility on Saturday afternoon, Pope Leo personally met with and thanked the operating surgeon, the attending medical team, healthcare workers, the rector of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, and hospital directors.
Reflecting on his time in care, the Holy Father shared how the ordeal gave him a renewed empathy for individuals facing health struggles, stating that the experience allowed him to feel a unique closeness to everyone living through illness or infirmity. His release was cleared on Saturday after final morning blood tests and a chest X-ray confirmed his readiness to return home to the Vatican.
Looking ahead, Pope Leo announced that he will begin a step-by-step return to his routine now that the delicate phase of his treatment has passed, relying on divine help and the continued prayers of the faithful. In preparation for his procedure, the Prefecture of the Papal Household had previously paused all public audiences through Tuesday, October 20.
