Pope Leo XIV has urged Catholic communicators to use digital tools in ways that uphold truth, respect human dignity, and promote peace and care for creation. His message was delivered to participants at the SIGNIS World Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, and signed on his behalf by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
In his greetings, the Pope expressed spiritual closeness to those gathered and said he hopes their discussions will give new energy to efforts that make communication platforms serve the common good of the whole human family.
Reflecting on today’s digital reality, the message noted that much of daily life is now shaped by technology and the internet. Citing his encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo reminded participants that online communication is more than just sharing information. It also creates culture, influences how people see the world, and affects the collective conscience.
With that in mind, he encouraged communicators to develop practical strategies around the conference theme, “Digital Communication for Cultural Harmony and Environmental Wellbeing.” He said these strategies should be guided by truth and rooted in respect for every person’s dignity.
According to the message, this approach can help build a culture that reflects Gospel values of communion and peace. It can also foster responsible stewardship of the environment.
Pope Leo entrusted the work of the conference to Mary, Mother of the Church, and prayed that it would bear lasting fruit. He closed by imparting his Apostolic Blessing as a sign of wisdom and strength in the Lord.
