Pope Francis marked the 500th anniversary of the Theatines’ foundation by emphasizing the need for renewal within the Catholic Church. Addressing pilgrims in St. Peter’s Basilica, he stressed that faithful renewal requires courageously dismantling outdated structures to build anew, guided by the Holy Spirit.
The Pope highlighted three key aspects:
1. Renewal: Just as the ancient Constantinian building was demolished to make way for the new St. Peter’s Basilica, the Church must be willing to let go of what no longer serves its mission.
2. Communion: The construction of St. Peter’s Basilica was a collective effort, symbolizing the importance of community and valuing every individual’s contribution.
3. Service: Good intentions remain sterile without concrete action and selfless service, exemplified by Saint Gaetano’s charitable works and Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice.
Pope Francis emphasized that the true beauty of the Church lies not in its physical structures but in its people, the “living stones” that form the mystical body of Christ.
“Five hundred years ago, your founders dedicated their lives not to bricks and marble but to the Church, the people of God,” he said. “Let us strive to build a Church that is renewed, communal, and servant to all.”
