Pope Francis will make history on 26 December by opening a Holy Door in Rome’s Rebibbia prison, symbolizing hope for prisoners worldwide. This momentous occasion is part of the Jubilee 2025, a year-long celebration of hope and renewal in the Catholic Church.
The Pope’s visit to Rebibbia prison is a tangible sign of hope for those living in difficult conditions, particularly prisoners who face harsh imprisonment, emotional void, and lack of respect. In his bull, Spes non confundit, Pope Francis urges governments to undertake initiatives that restore hope through amnesty, remission of sentences, and reintegration programs.
The Jubilee 2025 will kick off on 24 December with Pope Francis presiding over Holy Mass in St. Peter’s Square, followed by the opening of the Holy Door and a bell concert. The Pope will then visit Rebibbia prison the next day, becoming a “pilgrim of hope” for those in need.
In line with the Pope’s vision, an agreement was signed with the Italian Ministry of Justice on 11 September to provide prisoners with opportunities for reintegration through socially committed activities. This gesture embodies the spirit of hope and redemption that defines the Jubilee 2025
