Pope Francis Plans to Declare St. Irenaeus as the ‘Doctor of Unity’

Pope Francis plans to declare St. Irenaeus of Lyon a Doctor of the Church with the title ‘Doctor of Unity’. The pope announced in a speech to the St. Irenaeus Working Group. It is a group of Catholic and Orthodox theologians.

“Your patron, St. Irenaeus of Lyon- whom soon I will willingly declare a Doctor of the Church with the title of  Doctor Unitatis- came from East, exercised his episcopal ministry in the West, and was a great spiritual and theological bridge between Eastern and Western Christians,” said Pope during the meeting at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome.

The saint was a Greek bishop noted for his role in guiding and expanding Christian communities in the southern regions of present day France and more widely, for the development of Christian theology by combating heresy and defining orthodoxy.
