Pope Francis expressed deep sadness over the passing of Cardinal Eugenio Dal Corso, Bishop Emeritus of Benguela, Angola, who died on October 20 at 85. In a telegram to Bishop Domenico Pompili of Verona, the Pope offered heartfelt condolences to the local Church, Dal Corso’s family, and those attending the funeral.
Dal Corso, a member of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence, served as a missionary in Argentina and Angola. He was appointed Bishop of Saurimo by Pope John Paul II in 1997 and Bishop of Benguela by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008. Pope Francis elevated him to Cardinal in 2019.
Pope Francis praised Dal Corso as a “faithful religious” and “zealous missionary” who dedicated himself to the weakest and most fragile, witnessing to Christ’s love. He assured prayers for Dal Corso’s soul and imparted his Apostolic Blessing on those mourning his death.
