The Argentine ambassador to the Holy See, Luis Pablo Beltramino, appointed in April of this year, today presented his credentials before Pope Francis.
The Holy Father received the official in an audience at the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican, in a “very good, very warm and jovial” meeting, the 63-year-old ambassador, who attended with his wife, Mercedes Schang, told La Nación
During the meeting, he expressed his interest in “continuing to develop the bilateral agenda, within the framework of the excellent historical relations between Argentina and the Holy See.”
They also talked about the situation in Argentina and issues on the international agenda. Regarding a possible visit by the Pope to his native country, he summarized: “He is already invited. We hope that he will come and it is a decision of the Holy Father when and how.”
In a statement published on the Foreign Ministry website, the ambassador states: “The Argentine Embassy has its doors open and together with the valuable team of professionals who accompany me we will continue to strengthen the strong historical ties that exist between the Argentine Republic and the Holy See in “for our country, our fellow citizens and shared universal values.”
His first public participation as ambassador to the Holy See was last weekend, during a Mass celebrated in Rome for a new anniversary of the first national government of Argentina, where he gave his first speech.
Luis Pablo María Beltramino is a lawyer from the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina, a practising Catholic and father of three children. He has been an official of the Nation’s Foreign Service since 1991.
He served as Undersecretary of Foreign Policy and held positions in the Argentine embassies in the United States, the Netherlands and Vietnam.
