Pope Francis was transferred to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome to undergo an operation on 7 June, after presiding over the general audience.
This was reported by the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni: ” The Holy Father, at the end of the General Audience, went to the A. Gemelli University Hospital, where in the early afternoon he will be subjected, under general anesthesia, to a laparotomy and abdominal wall surgery with a prosthesis”.
According to Bruni’s statement, “the operation, arranged in recent days by the medical team that assists the Holy Father, became necessary due to a closed laparocele that is causing recurrent, painful, and worsening subocclusive syndromes.” A laparocele is a hernia that forms over a scar resulting from surgery.
” The stay in the health center will last several days to allow the normal course of the postoperative period and full functional recovery,” the statement concludes.
Yesterday, Tuesday, June 6 at 10:40 am (local time), Pope Francis visited the hospital for a medical check-up and returned to the Vatican before noon.
From the Vatican, they reported that it was about scheduled medical checks and it was this morning that they confirmed that the Holy Father will be operated on.
It should be remembered that the Pontiff was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome at the end of March due to “severe acute pneumonia in the lower part of the lung”, as he himself explained during the press conference on his return from his trip to Budapest.
