Pope Francis celebrated Mass at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on 7 September 2024. In his homily, he emphasized the importance of overcoming distance and isolation, both physical and spiritual.
The Pope reflected on the Gospel passage where Jesus heals a deaf and mute man, highlighting the theme of distance and closeness. He noted that the man’s condition symbolized the spiritual distance we can experience when our hearts are closed off to God and others due to selfishness, indifference, and fear.
Pope Francis encouraged the faithful to open up to God, their brothers and sisters, and the Gospel, which should be the compass of their lives. He assured them that they are united in the Holy Spirit and the Lord, despite feeling separated or distant.
The Pope invoked the example of Blessed John Mazzucconi, who brought Christ to Papua New Guinea amidst difficulties and hostilities, ensuring that no one remained deaf to the joyful message of salvation.
Pope Francis concluded by urging the Papuan people to take courage, open up to the joy of the Gospel, and encounter God and their brothers and sisters with love.
