Pope Francis Declares Jubilee Year and Plenary Indulgence for the 375 Years of Eucharistic Miracle in Peru

Pope Francis granted a Jubilee Year and plenary indulgence in Peru, to those who make pilgrimages to the Santa María Magdalena parish in the Ciudad Eten district, in the northern diocese of Chiclayo, Lambayeque region.

The Jubilee Year, which will begin on 22 July 2024, and will end on 22 July 2025, was granted in commemoration of the 375th anniversary of the appearance of the Child Jesus in a consecrated host, the only Eucharistic miracle of this type in the country.

The announcement was made by Mons. Edinson Farfán, Bishop of Chiclayo, has received the powers, through decree 1771 of the Apostolic Penitentiary, to impart the papal blessing with plenary indulgence on 23 July in Ciudad Eten.

According to a statement shared with ACI Prensa by the Diocese of Chiclayo, what was decreed by Pope Francis seeks to promote the piety of parishioners and the salvation of souls.

Christian faithful who devoutly receive the papal blessing, even if they are not physically present at the event or follow it through the media, can gain plenary indulgence, according to the norms of Canon Law.

It will be possible to gain plenary indulgence with pilgrimages to the parish temple located in the main park of Ciudad Eten, fulfilling the three conditions: sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Jesús León Ángeles, coordinator of the Catholic group Milagro Eucarístico Perú, promoters of this Eucharistic miracle, assured in an interview with ACI Prensa that in these times “we need the illumination of the Holy Spirit more than ever.”

“This jubilee invites us to rediscover the living and breathing presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of all our existence. The Church, without the Eucharist, would be absolutely nothing,” he asserted.

León Ángeles also highlighted the importance of this event for the local community and the Diocese of Chiclayo: “We must beat with that Eucharistic heart that will now be lived throughout the Diocese of Chiclayo. Monsignor’s announcement, made in the parish of Santa María Magdalena, in our parish temple, was widely applauded and filled us with joy and emotion.”
